Welcome to my blog - Dr T. Talks about ....
Hey there, folks! Dr. Denise Tonner here, your friendly neighborhood primary care and endocrinologist and concierge physician. Today, let's have a lighthearted chat about something that's quite important: blood pressure! So, how low does your blood pressure REALLY need to be? And why should you even care? Let's break it down together!
Alright, let's start with the basics. Your blood pressure is like the force exerted by your blood on the walls of your arteries. Think of it as a little push from your circulatory system. It's measured with two numbers, like a dynamic duo: the top number (systolic pressure) and the bottom number (diastolic pressure). Now, the gold standard for "normal" blood pressure is around 120/80 mmHg. But hey, remember, everyone's a unique individual, so your target may vary depending on factors like age, medical history, and overall health.
Alright, so how low should you go? The ideal blood pressure range typically aims for anything below 120/80 mmHg. But here's the kicker: if you have conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, or a history of stroke or heart disease, your healthcare provider might recommend an even lower target. Why? Well, it's all about reducing the risk of complications and keeping your cardiovascular system in tip-top shape.
Now, here's a little heads-up: too low can also be a no-no. Hypotension, or excessively low blood pressure, can cause some not-so-fun symptoms like dizziness, fainting, fatigue, and even inadequate blood supply to your precious organs. So, finding that sweet spot is key, my friends.
But why does blood pressure matter, you ask? Oh, it matters more than you might think! Keeping your blood pressure in a healthy range is like a superhero cape for your heart and blood vessels. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can put you at risk for serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. By keeping that blood pressure in check, you're actively giving your cardiovascular system a much-deserved high-five.
On a personal note, my father was placed on dialysis after years of poorly controlled blood pressure. Many physicians in the 1960s-1980s felt that 150/90 or even a bit higher was just 'borderline' so often they did not treat those numbers. Unfortunately, one of those serious conditions that come after years of poorly controlled blood pressure is kidney failure, resulting in the need for dialysis. My goal for you, is to never have to worry about that problem, because nowadays, we keep a much closer eye on those numbers!
So, what can you do to keep your blood pressure in the happy zone? Well, regular monitoring is a good start. Lifestyle changes like eating a balanced diet, exercising, managing stress (cue the meditation or yoga), and limiting sodium intake can work wonders. And hey, if needed, your superhero healthcare provider might prescribe some medications to help keep things on track.
Remember, you're not alone on this journey! Your trusty primary care and endocrinologist concierge physician (that's me!) is here to guide you. Let's chat about your blood pressure goals and develop a personalized plan that fits your unique needs.
Alright, my friends, take charge of that cardiovascular health, have fun, and keep that blood pressure in the superhero range! Your heart will be doing a happy dance.
